Small Limp-Bound Books

image image image

This series of small limp-bound books was a joint project for me and Aldred, with additional help from Gwen and Gwen's sister-in-law Lark. There are 27 of them in this photo, and they will be given out as participation gifts in an A&S tourney. The covers are leather, unlined. The text block is calligraphic parchment paper, attached to the leather covers with long-stitch sewing. The leather ties are attached to the covers through slits, following a diagram in Szirmai's Archeology of Medieval Bookbinding (Fig. 10.27 on p. 315). Szirmai's chapter on limp bindings provides much of the information used to make these little books.
