Scroll for the Royal Scrivener

One of the official duties of the royal scrivener is to create a scroll for her successor. I chose to base this scroll on the work of Jean le Tavernier because I love grisaille and because this is a wonderful image of a scribe. I used ground pigments (vine black, burnt umber, and titanium white, a substitution for lead white), all bound with glair. The source is Miracles de Notre-Dame, illuminated by Jean le Tavernier in c. 1456, folio 19 recto. From start to finish, this scroll took about 30 hours. Completed in April 2008.
