These scrolls are shown in roughly reverse chronological order. I have used handmade tempera paints—ground dry pigments and binder (usually glair)—for the more recent scrolls. Earlier scrolls (those prior to 2008) were done in acrylic, thinned down considerably so that the paints are translucent. The surface supports include genuine vellum (when I have a generous patron), opaline vellum, paper, and Bristol board. Inks are either Speedball or Higgins inks, usually a waterproof black India ink, although recently I have also made my own iron-gall and brazilwood inks. I use Speedball dip pens. All gilding is done with 23.5K or 22K loose gold leaf. I have used both gesso and PVA as bases for gilding. In the most recent scrolls, gold highlights are shell gold. In one case, the gold lettering is shell gold, applied with a dip pen. Each thumbnail is a link to a page with an enlargement of the scroll, as well as some details about it.

You can see more of my scribal work in the bookbinding section, because one finished book and one in-process book are illuminated.
